Lots of people ask this question and most of them probably made the matter complicated by editing the DNS Zone from WHM in the DNS Functions. But they actually should just do it in cPanel which is A LOT easier.

Just log in your cPanel which manages the domain that you want to add support for wildcard (*) subdomains. Go to:

Domains > Subdomains

And enter asterisk * in the Subdomain and choose the domain you need it added to.

Click “Create”.

That’s it. Now you can access your domain from any random subdomain and it will automatically use the A record of the main domain as their own.

Few know that those who have web hosting are at the same time endowed with a free VPN (Virtual Private Network, a very safe connection to transfer important data). With a few simple steps by the help of PuTTY, the tiny legendary SSH program, anyone with a web hosting account can have a private VPN that’s dedicated, premium and only limited by the monthly bandwidth of your hosting account. This is the safest VPN because it’s not even monitored by the VPN company. It’s completely YOURS.

Before proceeding, you need to make sure your hosting account has SSH enabled. Most hosts offer that nowadays.

What you will get?

You will have an awesome auto-login VPN program on your Windows desktop via SSH tunnels, based on PuTTY. Should get you the same thing on other systems following the same steps outlined below.

Double click to start the program, and a dedicated socks5 proxy will be established on your local computer which connects to your hosting server to form a VPN you can use.

How to get it?

To turn your web hosting account into a private VPN so you can use it to surf the web safely and anonymously, simply follow these steps:

Finish these steps: http://www.shanghaiwebhosting.com/web-hosting/use-your-web-hosting-ssh-session-as-a-tunnel-for-socks5-proxy-server

In step 4 at the above URL, you will save the session and give it a name, e.g. ‘my_server’.

Create a shortcut of this command:
C:\tools\putty.exe -load my_server -l your_user_name -pw your_password

Make sure to use your own path to putty.exe rather than “C:\tools\putty.exe”.

The 3rd step is what makes all the difference – manual login or auto-login.

Without the 3rd step, you could still establish the VPN connection but you need to manually enter user name and password every time you start the SSH session. To make things simple, you want PuTTY to auto-login with pre-entered user name and password. That’s where the command line shortcut comes in.

The -load directive loads the saved session, -l specifies the SSH login user name, and -pw specifies the SSH password.

Double click, and that’s it!

Double click the shortcut and an SSH session window will be opened, PuTTY then automatically logs in with the user name and password you provided. If the auto-login is successful, a connection to your hosting server is established, thus VPN created.

Simply leave the session window open and configure your web browser to use ‘localhost’ as socks5 proxy on port ‘8844’ (you can specify a different port in Step 3 of this article), and you will be surfing the web safely and anonymously on a privately premium VPN!

Note that all your browsing traffic is counted on your web hosting’s monthly bandwidth bills. Think twice when you want to perform large downloads (such as 5GBs or larger) because they might end up being a bit costy.
The last time it was a 512MB VPS (VPS512) that has now been upgraded to VPS1000, doubling everything, RAM, disk storage and monthly bandwidth (tripled!), yet the price tag stays the same. Here are a few coupons that you can use to get 50% off the first 2 months should you want to sign up. The old coupons you may find elsewhere for VPS512 AND VPS 768 have been invalidated.

Okay, to the review part. After about 2 months I feel I should start using the VPS – I admit it’s a impulsive buy, just can’t resist the monster upgrade and 50% off offer – and the primary domain I provided when I signed up with it was somehow randomly picked, and now I want it changed into something else. So I sent the support team an email.

Note it’s about 2:30 A.M. CST. One of them, John, quickly responded to my help request, in less than 10 minutes, did the change and taught me how to debug DNS myself with a free tool intodns.com which by the way is a very cool tool.

The tool showed that I still needed to set the name servers for my domain at the registrar. I didn’t know how to do that so John asked me which registrar I was using, searched for the documents for me and then sent me the exact steps I needed to follow to accomplish the task.

Blah blah blah.

Things kept going wrong because I had no idea what I was doing with the DNS. I wanted to use my own name servers. It was after about 20 emails that I finally got everything in place and the domain started working. They responded to EVERY message in less than 5 minutes. And it’s about 4:00 A.M. CST.

End of story? Not.

I suddenly changed my mind that I wanted to completely re-provision the slice, using the new domain / host name in the first place, because, you know, I have obsessive disorders that knowing the old domain is still somewhere in the box makes me uneasy. I could still find the old domain listed via traceroute and reverse-IP lookup.

So I’m compelled to send another support ticket. John kindly asked me why I needed to do that and I told him I just wanted to, because I feel compelled. He then suggested me that I back up everything I can and let him know when I was ready.

After about 5 hours, the rebuild was done. I had a brand new slice that was as new as just born. Not sure how much time they spent in the 5 hours just for easing my compulsive mentality, I am sure grateful for their dedicated support.

5/5.

Find more reviews of them here: http://www.wiredtreereviews.org/

Office 365 is a set of team collaboration / productivity web applications for professionals, businesses, government agencies and education institutions. It currently offers 3 different plans:

For professionals and small businesses, $6 / user / month, basic features

For midsize businesses and enterprises, $12 and more / user / month, advanced features

For education

And I signed up with the first one which is meant for individual professionals, or businesses / organizations with up to 25 employees, at $6 / user / month. For now, I have yet to reach the end of my first month, and I have only one user in my organization which is myself. So this review would be pretty straightforward and very limited to those who are looking at the multi-user features in team collaboration / communication.

You will need a credit card to sign up. To verify the credit card, They billed me $1 when I signed up and that’s it. So I guess they bill clients at the end of every month instead of at the beginning.

What I get for $6 / month?

For $6 / month at Microsoft Office 365, I get these cool stuff:

Online web applications of Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. You can create documents, edit and save them in your favorite web browser, and publish them to your team site so you and your colleagues can collaborate on them. You can also upload existing documents from your computer to Office 365.

You can re-create your public website by 3 editing panels, namely Home, Insert and Design:

From the content navigation sidebar on the left, you can add new content and remove existing content to the Recycle Bin: pages, documents, images, etc.
And as always, you can also add your own top-level domain to SharePoint, from the Admin panel, rather than using a subdomain of sharepoint.com.

Other than a public website, a private Team Site is pre-configured and ready to be edited when you (as the administrator) first sign in. This site is used as a portal for all team members where you can list contacts, shared documents, calendar entries / meeting schedules, announcements, discussion posts, and so forth. Much like editing the public website, you can freely edit the Team Site as if it’s a web page: lists, tables, images, links, etc.

Exchange Online. Emails hosting under the domain @yourcompany.onmicrosoft.com. Likewise, you can add your own domain for the emails thus having @yourcompany.com hosted at Office 365. Everything looks like the desktop applications. You would be using a very similar online version of Outlook (web app) and it’s very intuitive. The learning curve is minimal.

A calendar (Week view): (also are Day view, Work Week view and Month view)

User self management:

Organization management:

Full administration panel and organization management features:

Some quick facts about Office 365

It bills you at the end of each billing term. For instance, if you started the plan on Jan. 15th, it would first bill you $1 to verify credit card and then $6 / month each month on Feb. 15th and on.

If you cancel the subscription, your subscription will remain active until the end of the billing term.

You get 99.9% uptime guarantee.

You can add multiple domains to your service. The default one is yourcompany.onmicrosoft.com for email and yourcompany.sharepoint.com for team site / public site.

You can use different plans / multiple subscriptions under one administrator account.

Update: Here’s my most recent review of WiredTree.

I had an enjoyable experience with WiredTree (Some Coupons) half a year back when I was starting a joint venture with one of my friends and needed managed VPS hosting. Joe Doss was very helpful in answering my concerns and questions before sign-up. After testing out their demo download and ensured of a good data center and smooth Internet connections, I decided to go with them.

I went with the $99 managed hybrid plan. I was then pretty new to VPS hosting / dedicated hosting where you are in control of much more stuff than when you are with shared hosting. Though they are all very well managed at WiredTree (click to activate coupon), it’s still a bit overwhelming with all the options and different control panel sections. I asked questions. A lot of them. And they responded to my support tickets within 15 minutes EVERY time, no matter when you submit them. I dealt with not just one of their support staff but quite a few of them and they are all quick, polite and to the point. When I search through my Gmail inbox, there are a total of 60 conversations (hundreds of messages back and forth) I had with them in a short matter of less than one month. They were professional and kind in every message they addressed to me.

The hosting part of my joint venture was absolutely awesome. If it weren’t the decision to abort the project with my friend, I’d trust the most important of my sites to WiredTree. So when I told them that I had to close the contract and leave them after just one month, I was kind of upset for them because they have been so nice to me. They replied to my request to close my hosting account with complete understanding and even offered me refund for the remaining days of the month (it wasn’t a full month, just 20 days or so), I asked them to keep it.

As for uptime and server performance, I didn’t set up any 3rd party monitoring or pinging service but as I was working furiously on the project in the 20 days, accessing my websites at WiredTree thousands of times and hundreds of hours, I have not seen the slightest of indications of slowness or down time.

4.8 / 5 from me.

WiredTree Coupons

You can get very nice discounts by using one of these coupons of WiredTree when you host with them, such as extra 50% RAM, extra 50% bandwidth or lifetime 20% off. Just enter the code in the Coupon Code text box and hit Update Total button on the order page. All coupon codes listed there are confirmed to be working as of today, except V768-333333 that may be unreliable.

Googlebot is the indexing program of Google that visits your site to fetch the content to determine your search engine rankings. With a popular website, tens of thousands of pages can be a problem in that Googlebot may visit more than you want because it’s expending your precious bandwidth and even crashing your server. Every crawler bot visit is no different than a user one and your site has to perform all necessary actions and logics to render the web page to the search engine crawler bot such as Googlebot including searching through a database with potentially millions of records which could take a while. Imagine, the Googlebot pays 300,000 visits a month to your site. That’d be a substantial expenditure in bandwidth and server computing resources.

For example, one of my sites have experienced 338,768 hits from just one IP of Googlebot last month. I have no idea why Googlebot is so fanatic about this site because it rarely have any backlinks and Google is neither sending any significant traffic. But one thing is for sure, that this site is creating some serious trouble on my hosting bills because of Gooblebot. While we cannot totally deny Googlebot from visiting our websites, we can do something to slow it down a little bit.

There are 2 things you can do:

Visit Google Webmaster Central: http://www.google.com/webmaster, sign in to webmaster tools, (add if you haven’t, and) select the site in question, select Site configuration, select Settings, select Set custom crawl rate of Crawl rate and adjust the scroll bar to slow the crawl rate down.

Create robots.txt and place it at the root of your website, put these 2 lines inside:

User-agent: *
Crawl-delay: 20

Wherein the value of Crawl-delay is the time in seconds that the search engine bot should wait between requests. 20 is a very slow option. Most search engines such as Google wait less than 1 second to fetch a moderately popular website.

Some argue that Google never respects the Crawl-delay option of robots.txt and the only way to decrease the visiting frequency of Googlebot is to adjust the scroll bar in Google Webmaster Central.

By Rackspace I mean Rackspace.com the managed dedicated hosting service, not RackspaceCloud.com the cloud hosting. I’ve been talking a lot lately about Rackspace Cloud so I thought I’d make it clear. ;)

Check them out, they are pretty much the most expensive host you can find on the web. Their most basic server costs over $400 a month with 2TB monthly bandwidth. It’s by all means not a generous offer but it’s probably the most reliable and responsive platform you will ever need to know. They have the best uptime across the entire industry. A profitable online business deserves an uptime of 100%, because every minute of down time costs you money – no matter how solid and perfect your website is, it’s nothing when it’s down.

Rackspace provides the best support to its clients. They are not just a hosting provider, they are the all-around IT company who you can trust your entire IT infrastructure with. They take over everything from creating to optimizing, and monitoring to troubleshooting. When something goes wrong, chances are they have actively found and fixed it even before you know it. Many of the top players use Rackspace for their hosting needs. WHT, the Internet’s No.1 web hosting forum, has been with them for years. In a word, Rackspace is the kind of hosting you need when every second of your business counts.

5% Referral Discount for You

Anyway, as I’m a partner of Rackspace, I can earn or give 5% discount off any of their managed dedicated server packages. Shoot me a message about your intention to host with them, so I can get you the 5% discount and ask them to contact you. I’m currently not relying on this to make a living so, it’s better to pass along the favor than letting my partnership with them sitting in dust.

As per FTC requirement, I’m not making any money off this at all. ;)

Cloud Hosting

If you find their dedicated service a little more privileged than you can afford, their cloud hosting may be a better deal. Use this promo code for Rackspace Cloud to get a discount off their cloud hosting plans.
All the promo codes will be annulled by then except for Cloud Servers. If you intend to sign up with them, now is the time. Use the promo code (Reveal Code) to grab the $25 deal before it is gone forever.

Activate Promo Code at RackspaceCloud.com »
Promotional discount discontinued as of March 18th, 2010

As the entrenched leader in cloud hosting, Rackspace Cloud is the cloud products division of Rackspace, the world renowned managed dedicated hosting provider. To make a long story short, cloud hosting is simply multiple servers (a pool of servers) simultaneously hosting for your websites and web applications. It’s the base of SaaS hosting. With the Rackspace Cloud promo code:

(Reveal Code) click to activate

You can try their Cloud Sites, the managed cloud hosting package for 30 days on unconditional money back policy in addition to an extra $25 discount off the first month (rebate to your credit card).

What are the Cloud benefits?

It handles usage / traffic spikes much better than any other types of hosting can. Because it automatically scales and distribute computing resources on demand on the fly!

It provides failover that no single dedicated server can, drastically reducing the chance of down times by instantly switching to a redundant server in the cloud. Well, actually not that much of a redundant server because that server is part of the cloud all the time. Because each of your sites is hosted simultaneously on a couple of distributed servers, if one server fails or falls off the network grid, the service is still online on the other servers.

It bills you in the manner of utility, thus no mountainous sunk cost ever for businesses to build up information technology infrastructure of their own. Use as much as you need and pay only for what you use.

What are there?

At Rackspace Cloud, they have created 3 distinct product lines, namely Cloud Sites, Cloud Servers and Cloud Files. Each plan has its own scaling model. Aside from their unique online application to manage your account and websites, you know, creating and editing stuff such as databases, email accounts and down line clients, you will also be allocated certain amount of hosting capacity.

With Cloud Sites at the base price $100 per month, you will have:

50GB disk storage

500GB monthly transfer

10,000 cloud computing cycles (roughly equal to the full capacity of a 2.8 GHz modern processor for a month)

24 x 7 x 365 online live chat and toll free phone support backed by Fanatical Support™

Both Linux (for LAMP projects) and Windows (for .NET projects) platforms are available at your convenience

Cloud clustering: automatic scaling to the highest capacity available

Resource floors: contrary to Amazon EC2 using ceilings to restrict hosting resource usage, Rackspace Cloud guarantees a floor (minimum resource capacity that will always be exclusively available to you) and gives you as much extra resource as possible when you need them most.

Rackspace Cloud promotion code

You can get all these plus $25 discount by using the Rackspace Cloud promo code:

(Reveal Code) click to activate

Simply enter the code (Reveal Code) into the Promo or Referral Code box when you are ordering Cloud Sites:

Activate Promo Code at RackspaceCloud.com »

The discount is available to you at the end of the month as a rebate once you pass the 30-day risk free trial threshold – yes, you can cancel any time you want without risking any money at all. Absolutely free trial in the first 30 days.

This referral code also applies for Cloud Servers and gives you $10 discount off the first month.

Jointly Hosted Forum is now open for forum applications. Please follow the steps outlined in this post to get your own forums.

You will own a section of forums dedicated to topics of your choice (must be family-friendly) and be a moderator of the forums and users.

The service is completely free for all, though we reserve the right to suspend any inappropriate forums at our sole discretion. Other than that, forums inactive for more than 3 months may be suspended.

On top of that, enjoy having your discussion board!

Be a moderator and have your own vBulletin forum!

(This free service is only available to members having 100 or more posts.)

Ever want to create and run your own forum boards? Ever want to be a moderator and administer your own forums and users? Let alone on vBulletin™ which is simply the best and most globally recognized forum software out there?

Now anyone can have his or her own section of forums like this! Just follow these 4 steps:

Register an account at Jointly Hosted Forum.

Post around until you have at least 100 posts.

Apply by starting a thread in this board with these information:

Your name: full name would be preferrable

Username of registration: your account username at JHF that you would like to be the moderator

Your website URL: preferrably the one associated with your forums, but it’s totally ok if you don’t have any

Forum purpose: what you are going to use the forums for

Forum section title: such as “Make A Website” for this one

Forum boards: a title as well as a short description for each of them, such as these

To be notified on the thread after we have created the forums and granted moderation privileges to your account.

Note: Forums inactive for 3 months may be suspended, albeit your user account will always be fine.

Jointly Hosted is one of our latest ventures. Basically it’s a non-profit shared dedicated hosting service that provides dedicated hosting at shared hosting price tag, yet much better in terms of server performance than other shared solution providers. How do we do that?

We make no profit by selling servers themselves. The server is provided to a number of users at almost the original price (plus 20% for PayPal fees and time spent on monitoring the server for performance and uptime, as well as administrating the user forum community).

We never oversell. We try to make the monthly subscription charges of each account within $20, and we slice a common dedicated server among just 10 – 20 users. In contrast, most affordable hosting providers jam hundreds of users into a single dedicated server, severely slowing the service down, thus the performance of your websites.

We only buy in fully managed, monitored and secured servers from the most prestigious hosting providers. Such as WiredTree, SoftLayer and RackSpace.

So you resell dedicated servers?

Not really because we are just middle man who consolidates people together to make sharing a dedicated server possible. We also provide a hangout place for you guys to meet and connect.

Support?

To be honestly, we can’t provide as sophisticated support as that of other for-profit hosting businesses. But we have set up a community forum for you to publicly discuss stuff and complain about things. We will respond to any reasonable requests for support such as adding software packages to the server, in the premise that it would not affect other users on the server. We will also relay the message to the server provider.

There will also be a server performance monitor script where all users of the server can check out who is using how much CPU, RAM and bandwidth, etc.

With the absolute underselling policy of Jointly Hosted, the server will be far from reaching its full capacity most of time. Vast majority of the performance problems will not be possible in the first place. Need for support is reduced to the minimum.

How do we profit then?

We will first try to maintain a non-profit state by the current pricing scheme for a while, without creating any negative balance, to see where it would head. When this all takes off and people start feeling it’s worth a few extra bucks to have a shared dedicated hosting account that guarantees cost-effectiveness and reliability, we will take the next step as to profit as a self-sustainable business. Possible venues include:

Forum advertising

Paid support

Accompanied services

Therefore, we and our users stand in the same line instead of against each other. We will NEVER increase the profit margin by crowding the servers which goes against the rights of the users.

Not convinced?

Take a look at our first server, every account comes with a dedicated unique IP!

Why haven’t Google integrated their toolbar into Chrome yet? Firefox 3 absolutely sucks in the loading time and browsing speed. Scrolling through a heavy web page with lots of visual elements such as images is just a pain in the ass and on average, I have to restart the so-called most advanced modern browser 3 times everyday. Plus, it’s everything but fun when I have typed a thousand words in WordPress that the browser suddenly freezes itself.

I don’t know why it’s so hard, Chrome can make it a breeze, why can’t the people at Mozilla?!

To express my anger toward the Mozilla team, I’m releasing this Dreamhost discount code:

FF3SUCKS

Which gives you 1 unique IP and 3 lifetime free domain registrations when you order yearly hosting plans from them. Their signing up process has gone through some changes in that you now get the chance to try it free for a certain period of time before actually plummeting into paying.

Just enter the discount code FF3SUCKS in the Promo Code box at signup.

Disclosure: I get a $15 one-time compensation from Dreamhost when you use this discount code.
